The air quality in London isn't the best. This week, Greenpeace activists climbed up statues across London to protect the mouths of the statues with air pollution masks.

There are bigger statues in places with worse AQI. Here are the top 30 tallest statues and the average AQI around them this week.

The six statues with the highest AQI were:

Although these statues could possibly look great with pollution masks, they mostly appear to be religious figures - not particularly appropriate for activist art/vandalism.

It may seem from this chart that air pollution is an Asian phenomenon. The truth is, in fact, that tall statues are an Asian phenomenon. There's air pollution everywhere - both Big Ben and the Statue of Liberty were sitting around the 60s this week.

In conclusion, taller statues in the West and less air pollution everywhere, please.

Best Air Pollution Mask for Wearing Eye Glasses

January 12, 2016

The O2 Canada design team puts countless time and energy into designing the world's best pollution mask. We pride ourselves on customer input. When we started conducting focus groups for the first version of our mask, one of the major complaints on current masks is that they affect eye glasses. The main complaint is that their glasses fog up when using traditional masks. The humidity from exhaling rises and fogs up the glasses. Moreover, often times the glasses cannot fit over the bridge of the nose because the top of the mask impedes them. So, we took this feedback and designed the mask to allow for eye glasses. The mask does not affect eyewear and the user can be protected from pollution while seeing normally!

2015 Air Pollution Map

January 05, 2016

2015 was a particularly bad year for air pollution. In spring, western Europe experienced one of its worst air pollution events in decades. Paris and London were engulfed in smog. Weather was partly to blame as a dry March and warm spring affected air particulate levels. Paris took measures and removed half of the vehicles from the road to reduce air pollution levels. In June, the 6 million residents of Santiago, Chile were engulfed in smog for almost a month! Air pollution even affected Canada in the summer months. Forest fires in British Columbia led to dangerous air in Vancouver. In August, Tinajin was rocked by a massive chemical explosion sending toxins into the city. September saw the middle east covered by a sand storm forcing residents in Syria and Israel to stay indoors. October's forrest fires in Indonesia created headaches for Singapore and dangerous air for the residents. December witnessed a "gas chamber" of air in New Delhi India. Here's hoping to a cleaner 2016!

We've created a map below to help you visualize locations and particular events. The map makes it very clear that air pollution is indeed a global problem.

What are the most polluted cities on Earth?

December 29, 2015
